Advancing a collective commitment to serve the city of garden grove.

When a diverse group of organizations come together to serve a community — whose needs and demographics are equally diverse — branding can sometimes be tricky. When the organizations offer such a wide range of essential services, how does one distill that into an visual that resonates with the community using those services?

In the case of Garden Grove Community Collaborative (GGCC), I found it best to instead have the brand revolve around the higher values driving their services, and how they deserve to be seen by the community.

After doing several deep dives with their marketing committee, my colleague Kristin Feltz and I determined that the higher values behind GGCC's services are:

  • Equity

  • Care

  • Collaboration

And the attributes that should be associated with the collaborative are:

  • Respectability

  • Timelessness

  • Simple, yet profound

I drew inspiration from universally-recognized symbols and icons that had a wide, cross-cultural appeal. Then, with the committee's favored color-choices in mind, I created a logo that communicated all the above values and attributes:

As a bonus, the logo also had the collaborative's initials:

We launched the brand in a way that left plenty of room left for it to evolve in the future. In the meantime, however, the GGCC marketing committee was happy we included and listened to them every step of the way. And we, in turn, were glad to see their enthusiasm about being so involved in the process.

Samples and mockups showcasing how the GGCC brand and logo can be used in printed and digital marketing materials.

The group effort resulted in a brand that all members of the collaborative could be proud of, and for all the ways the collaborative will enrich the city of Garden Grove, I'm grateful to have been a part of it.
