Telling meaningful stories and expanding the definition of family.

As much as I love design, it's a fun change of pace when a client needs me to tap into my other skills to help them tell a story.

In the case of Hillsides, that means putting on my photography, video, and voiceover hats!

My first introduction to Hillsides was through photographing their staff headshots and Annual Gala, the latter of which raised funds for their program, as well as highlighted success stories from the youth who had completed the program:

Later, my colleague Kristin Feltz and I conducted interviews with Hillsides staff and families to promote their foster care & adoption services.

Beyond the technical expertise needed to get a shot that both looks and sounds good, telling a meaningful story requires genuine empathy and curiosity. And truly, in the few short hours we spent with Maria and Juan, we walked away from that with a greater respect for what foster families experience, as well as a richer understanding of the meaning of family.

That inevitably colored the way I directed, shot, edited, and provided voiceover for the final video.

And if all that weren't enough, I also had the privilege of filming and interviewing staff for Hillsides's leadership development program: I Lead Me.

It's one thing for an organization to care so deeply for children and families. But to see that care extended to staff as well, and witness how they're now empowered to support and have better interactions with each other?

For that, Hillsides is a prime example of what I mean when I say goodness deserves to be seen and heard.
